A Golden Jubilee is usually held to signify the 50th anniversary of an event or existence of a person, organisation or anything you can think of. This is usually a big milestone as 50 years is not a short duration of time. Considering that schools in Malaysia are relatively ‘young’, it is with pride and pleasure for SMK Dato Jaafar to have celebrated its 50th anniversary and marked it with a Golden Jubilee. So do read on this Berry Event to see the Golden Jubilee celebration graced by many important and famous personalities.
Berry Event #5 – SMK Dato’ Jaafar Jubli Emas 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner 2011 – National level

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato’ Jaafar (SDJ) started as a modest English secondary school (formerly from English College) at the Bukit Senyum palace (Istana Bukit Senyum) which is besides the present school building on 2nd January 1961. Bukit Senyum palace was once the presidential palace for Johor first Menteri Besar, Allahyarham Dato’ Jaafar Mohamad. The construction of the present school was completed in 1964 and officially given name ‘Sekolah Dato Ja’afar’. Currently the school official name is Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato’ Jaafar and it is a premier boy’s school in Johor Bahru.
SDJ alumni members, current students and teachers attended this event which was held on 19 February 2011 (Saturday) in conjunction with the school 50th anniversary celebrations (1961 – 2011) at PERSADA Johor, Johor Bahru.
The SDJ’s 50th (Jubli Emas) birthday celebration/event had a large turnout. There were around 1000 people (VVIP, VIP, SDJ alumni, teachers and students) for this event and this represented a huge success for the SDJ alumni.
Rehearsal started from 9.00 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. at Tanjung Puteri Hall.
This event was attended by guest-of-honour Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister (Timbalan Perdana Menteri Malaysia dan Menteri Pendidikan) Y.A.B. Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin bin Haji Mohd. Yassin and wife and Menteri Besar Johor Y.A.B. Dato’ Haji Abdul Ghani bin Othman and wife at 7.15 p.m.
This event was also graced by His Royal Highness( Duli Yang Maha Mulia) Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and Royal Patron (Penaung Diraja) Her Royal Highness (Duli Yang Maha Mulia) Raja Zarith Sofiah binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah.
SDJ alumni president, Yg. Bhg. Dato’ Syed Hussein Alhabshee, a 60-year-old entrepreneur who was once the country’s envoy to Dubai and Saudi Arabia gave a valuable speech in this event.
This was followed by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister (Timbalan Perdana Menteri Malaysia dan Menteri Pendidikan) Y.A.B. Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin bin Haji Mohd. Yassin who gave his speech.
Multimedia presentations which showed alumni events and charity works that has been done by alumni members since 2004 until 2010 were broadcasted. Besides that, there was also a slideshow on the brief history of SMK Dato’ Jaafar, Jubli Perak celebration (in 1988) which was attended by Y.A.B. Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin bin Haji Mohd. Yassin and the great achievement in sport. SDJ was once the champion in field sport (olahraga) of Johor Bahru district (MSSD) for 15 years and these students used to be selected as national (MSSM) athletes.
Johor state exco members and senior officers from Johor Education Department were invited to the dinner. The school’s principals Harbajan Singh and Goh Chee Kiat and SDJ YDP PIBG attended the celebration.
The SMK Dato’ Jaafar Jubli Emas 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner opening and cake-cutting ceremony were graced by Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and SDJ Alumni Royal Patron, Duli Yang Maha Mulia Raja Zarith Sofiah binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah.
It was followed by a 1Malaysia cultural performance on the famous Malay folk dance Zapin.
Next,1Malaysia cultural performance Chinese ribbon dancing.
Highlights of the dinner include performances by two of the nation’s high-flying Malaysian rock stars and Jaafarians, (Suhaimi Bin Abd. Rahman) Amy Search (the singer of Isabella) and (Norzaini Bin Mohd) Awang BPR. Besides that, the other guest artistes were the Kenny, Remy and Martin trio, who made a name for themselves in the 1980s for their Ku Petik Bintang Bintang.
SDJ orchestra comprising of selected members of the newly revived school brass band in 2010 performed current and past hit songs. The brass band was once sought after in the late ‘60s, ‘70s and early ‘80s. Amy Search and Awang BPR was once a member of SDJ brass band!
Harbajan Singh, a former and longest-serving principal, who headed the school from 1973 to 1991 also attended the event.
All the current SMK Dato’ Jaafar teachers attended this 50th Jubli Emas anniversary gala dinner with their best clothes – Batik. The Berry Berry Teacher and other SDJ Science & Mathematics teachers felt honoured to attend this SDJ Jubli Emas celebration event.

This event ended at 12 a.m. and it is a great success for SDJ Alumni to gather all the ex-students, ex-principals and ex-teachers. Happy 50th Birthday SDJ!
