SDJ current students and teachers attended this event which was held on 20 February 2011 in conjunction with the school 50th anniversary celebrations (1961 – 2011) at SMK Dato’ Jaafar, Johor Bahru.
The event was attended by guest-of-honour SDJ alumni Amy Search (Suhaimi Bin Abd. Rahman) and Awang BPR (Norzaini Bin Mohd). Both of them are the nation’s high-flying Malaysian rock stars! And this was a very rare chance that they came back to their former secondary school, SMK Dato’ Jaafar Johor Bahru for the grand opening ceremony of SDJ History Gallery.
Amy Search and family arrived at SMK Dato’ Jaafar at around 10.00 a.m. Everybody was very happy and excited to see them. Then, it was followed by Awang BPR. They met each other at the school canteen and had their breakfast before the whole event started.
Besides that, SDJ alumni president, Yg. Bhg. Dato’ Syed Hussein Alhabshee (60-year-old entrepreneur who was once the country’s envoy to Dubai and Saudi Arabia) arrived shortly at the school.
Before the event started, they met the SDJ (2007 – 2011) principal, Mr Goh Chee Kiat and signed the SDJ guest book in the principal room. They were happy to come back to their secondary school which reminded them of a lot of sweet memories.
After that, they visited the school compound. They went the SDJ school field which was the first station. It was followed by the school library and then school hall (Dewan Jaya) which brought back a lot of memories to them. Around 10.45 p.m., they were invited to celebrate the grand opening of the SDJ History Gallery. They were invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening ceremony and signed autographs for free for fans.
The preparation of the SDJ History Gallery (Galeri Sejarah SDJ) has started early this year after proper and detailed planning by the SDJ teachers.
The SDJ History Gallery was formerly a History classroom (bilik Sejarah) for the students to attend History classes and viewed videos or slideshow. Besides this function, it was also used to keep all the important materials of SDJ School history.
This room had a massive renovation which new cabinets, doors and curtains were installed and the walls painted with new colour . All the displayed materials was arranged by school teachers and students.
This involved a lot of hard work from teachers, laboratory assistants and workers to make this gallery. Some of them even stayed back until late evening to finish up all the work before the grand opening ceremony.
Teachers’ great work and students’ achievements were shown in this gallery. There were old newspaper cutting on SDJ Alumni’s achievements, all the important event which held in the school and SDJ Laureates “Tokoh SDJ” who brought glory to SDJ.
This was a great celebration and brought back a lot of good memories to all the alumni and teachers. For example the old picture of Amy Search (first right standing) (shared by Puan Hajah Foziah Zainal Abidin).
In this gallery, there were many trophies which represented SDJ Alumni’s members achievement. SMK Dato’ Jaafar was once called “the greatest athlete school in Johor Bahru”.
After that, Amy Search, Awang BPR and SDJ alumni were invited to have a short lunch in the meeting room by SDJ principal. They discussed on future changes and education policies for the school.
The event proceeded with a short forum with Amy Search and Awang BPR. During the forum, they discussed on their experiences in SMK Dato’ Jaafar as a student. According to them, SMK Dato’ Jaafar was a school with a lot of discipline problems. Therefore, the teachers at that time were extremely firm and school had tight disciplined. Students who did not follow school discipline were caned in public by the school principal or discipline teachers in the morning or during assembly. At that time, no parents questioned the system nor made complains.
Now SMK Dato’ Jaafar Johor Bahru has turned into a premier school after receiving the first batch of the premier students in 2005 (Form 1) and full premier students at 2006 (Form 1). This was one of the major changes that our guest-of- honours had discussed during the forum. During the forum, Amy Search sang his greatest hit song “Isabella” and who was also the main actor in the film “Isabella” (1990). He and Awang BPR also shared same pastime experiences in SDJ and they were very active in the SDJ brass band.
This event ended at 1.30 p.m. and it was a great success to SDJ teachers and students.
Happy 50th Birthday SDJ!
