Berry Role Model No.5 – Aspiring Designer – Cheryl Chu

July 16, 2010

Welcome to Part 5 of the Berry Role Model Series. The featured Role Model this issue is Ms Cheryl Chu, an aspiring designer. For most people, when we see the word “designer” we would immediately think of art stream students. While this might be true most of the time, but it is predominantly due to societal pressure forcing conformity. Academically bright students are always ushered into science stream, rather than being encourage to take up what they excel in and where their passion lies. However, we have with us today a young lass by the name of Cheryl Chu who dares to follow her dreams and break with convention. She thinks it is okay to be unconventional and live life with no “what ifs”. And to walk the talk, she switched from science stream in SPM to pursue her dream in an arts based course (Diploma in Design and Media majoring in Advertising). Not only is she offered a place at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in Singapore, she is also awarded a tuition grant from Singapore MOE and a bursary award from the Lee Foundation.

We are sure without a doubt that our Berry Readers would love to know a bit more about this go-getter and dare devil in life. You can read about her life and thoughts at <http://cherylchu.com>. In her blog, you would find her portfolio. (You won’t believe what she has amassed in her portfolio at the tender age of 17. But considering that she started learning Photoshop at 13, we can now fathom the phenomenon) We thought of not wanting to spoil the surprise of what you can find when you view her portfolio, but Berry Berry Easy cannot resist spilling the beans on the fact that she and her friends was The Star’s NiE Mag Inc. 2009 National Competition winner. She has also a design site (Cherying Design) producing fresh designs at <http://www.cherying.org>. Be sure to check them out.

Despite her grandiose portfolio and achievements, we were most impress by her bravery and maturity in being daring enough to go against convention to chase her dreams. We hope Berry Readers can take a leaf from her and chase your dreams too. Let the interview with Cheryl Chu begins.

Role Model #6 – Aspiring Designer – Cheryl Chu

Cheryl-Chu1) Who are you?

> Coming from the city of Kuching, Sarawak, I’m a soon to be 18 year old girl who just finished her SPM examination last year and will be pursuing tertiary education in the field of Design and Media in due time.

2) So what do you do daily as an aspiring designer?

> Frankly, being a high school graduate who is anticipating for college to commence, I do not have much of a fixed daily routine. As a freelance designer now, I usually check my emails on a daily basis because I communicate through email or instant messaging with my clients based outside of Kuching. For clients based in Kuching, I would mostly meet them out to discuss as I find it easier to communicate with a person face to face. I would usually then work on projects from websites to print publishing and finally do a lot of reading on the web. The Internet is a place where one can find vast information and resources and it’s why I like to take time off to get inspired while I still can. I believe that when I start college, life will be much different and time for my own stuff would lessen considerably.

3) What do you aspire to achieve in the future, considering that you have already achieve relatively much for your age?

> I feel that every young mind have ideas and dreams of their own and it’s the same for me. Besides focusing on my studies, I would love to work on achieving a name for myself so that more people would be exposed to my work. If possible, I’d like to be more than just a designer in the future, maybe enter entrepreneurship or more so, contribute back to society.

4) Tell us about your passion in design and how it started? Who/What inspired you to take up designing seriously?

> The story of how it all started has always amused me till now because never once then, would I think that these things I did would have changed my life so much. It initiated purely as entertainment when I created a “fansite” for my idol, Hilary Duff. Funny it may seem, when one sees a 13 year old doing something like this may find it much of a pointless and time-consuming thing to do, but as I look back at that 13 year old me, a shy girl who did not dare share to the world what she was doing behind the computer, I’ve learnt a lot of myself over the years. On top of that, I used my spare time as a teenager to learn about creating websites and reading online tutorials on techniques in designing graphics and sites with Adobe Photoshop.

Back in high school, being granted the opportunity of designing for my school’s magazine, prefectorial board, the class and for clubs had also contributed to me wanting to take up designing. I feel that the self-satisfaction and also appreciation I get from people who like my work had been one of the co-factors that has been pushing me all these while to pursue this passion. Besides, being able to make my family proud and believe in the things I do makes me trust my instincts and decisions I make.

Basically, my inspiration comes from my environment, and more specifically from the World Wide Web. Any creative piece of art/design I see that is worth giving a thumbs-up to, drives me to improve myself everyday for the better.

5) What are the traits that you have that has brought you success so far? (Our Berry Readers who would like to follow your footsteps would know what to aim for)

> Have lots of faith. I have always been a firm believer in putting a lot of faith in the things I aim for and to always, always strive hard to reach those goals. I am adamant that working hard pays off in the end.

6) So, share with us your other secret of how you (and your friends) achieved national success in the Star NiE Mag Inc 2009 competition? How would you advise our Berry Readers if they want to replicate your success?

> I don’t think there was any real secret behind winning this competition. We all worked hard together as a team, did some brainstorming together, focused on every single detail we could think of in those pages and just pulled ourselves through while having the confidence that we did our best.

7) Before we part, can you tell us what made you go against the convention to pursue your dreams? Were there any external pressure stopping you from pursuing your dreams (you dont have to mention the names though)? How did you overcome them?

> It’s very simple, I followed my heart. =)

There are certain people that tend to look down on those pursuing art related courses because they feel that these are careers that cannot bring one far enough to succeed. They do so sometimes not through speech but in the tone of their voices or facial expressions when I am asked of my plans for tertiary education. In the beginning, I avoided such questions or gave the typical “I’m not sure yet” answer because I was uncomfortable with being judged based on the opinions of others. I do understand that a lot of people care and feel that way because they fear I may be making the wrong choices which I might regret in the future. However, I realized though I cannot prove to people with such mindsets wrong at this very point of time but I can do so in the future, as long as I continue to stick with what I feel is right and not be easily shaken by others.

8 ) Oh, before we really end this interview you, can you share with us some “words of wisdom” which have brought you success over the years.

> Though I doubt I have experienced or achieved enough to actually impart “words of wisdom” to others, I have one thing to add however cliché or cheesy it may be, that is for anything one dreams in life, dare to pursue them no matter how crazy they are because it’s one’s determination and willpower that brings that person far in life.

- End -

Here are some of Cheryl’s other fantastic achievements:

  • Historical figure portrait drawing competition 2005 (School) – 1st place
  • “History of Sarawak” album making competition (State) 2008 – Consolation

Berry Role Model No.4 – Dedicated Nurse – Judy Goh

June 23, 2010

Berry Berry Easy would be pleased to introduce to our Berry Readers, our Berry Role Model #4. Our Berry Role Model today is Miss Judy Goh Wen Yi, a dedicated nurse with a hidden flair for performing arts. So just how talented is our young nightingale in white in performing arts? Fashion, music, drama and dance, you name it, she can do it all. Not only she can do it all, she is also quite a proven winner in all of them, garnering awards by the dozen.

You would expect her to enter the field of entertainment based on her credentials. However, this ambitious young lass decides to nurture her performing flair alongside her passion, which is in the field of nurturing the sick to wellness. It is no coincident that her penchant for performing arts goes hand-in-hand with her current job as a nurse as both jobs require intensity and full concentration at all times. Not too mention also the unseen dedication required where a minute on stage or the operating theater is the culmination of years of hard work. Berry Berry Easy think that the commendable traits of Judy Goh would be her dedication in her role in helping sick patients back to health, where most people would not even last a day working in the hospital. We wish her all the best in Institut Kesihatan Sains dan Kajururawatan Pantai (Pantai Institute of Health Science and Nursing), Ayer Keroh, Melaka. Let us listen from our Berry Role Model.

Role Model #4 – Dedicated Nurse – Judy Goh Wen Yi

1) Who are you?
5214_150636279008_765409008_3289662_1960755_n

> Hello everybody, my name is Judy Goh Wen Yi, you can just call me Judy. Well, who am I? I am just an ordinary girl who is pursuing my dream . I am 20 years old this year but I don’t look like one, most probably due to my height and appearance. LOL. I have tonnes of ambition but after sorting out them in my brain for a few years (during secondary school days), finally I choose to pursue my dream job as a nurse. My hobby would include inventing some new dishes (and cooking them), singing, dancing, reading manga, applying make-up and photo taking.

2) Why did you enter the field? Who/What was/is your inspiration?

> I enter this field is because of the “cute little dress” that is wore by all the nurses in the world. (That is just a joke. Sorry, I love to joke a lot) I choose to enter this challenging field simply because I love to help people and I’ll get to learn about medical knowledge in addition to the psychological needs of a patient. It is like killing two birds with a stone. As for my inspiration, I got it from a Hong Kong drama series about a bunch of young teenagers who wanted to be nurses. They continued to pursue their dream despite facing a lot of obstacles. In the end, we see that all of them had successfully achieved their dreams in becoming nurses, but the process of  chasing their dream was what that touches me a lot. They inspire me.

3) So what do you do daily as a nurse ?

> Well, actually nurses life ain’t easy. I have a very hectic and packed college schedule. Not much holiday, as the longest I had is only one week. (Can you believe it? Believe it!) My training consists of two basic criteria: Theory and practical. For theory, we will go to college and have our classes conducted by experience tutors. As for practical,  we will be off to our assigned hospital. We call it “posting time”. During posting, we will be guided by very strict clinical instructors (CI). In order to get our assignment done, we have to perform to our very best to get their recognition in order to become a nurse. We also have this system called “cross taking”, which means that each procedure done by us will be guided by the CI (trust me cross taking is not an easy task!) We have to complete the whole procedure book so thatwe can take part in the “Malaysia Nurses Board Examination”.

4) What satisfaction do you gain from your job?

> When you work all day long, sometimes you feel tired, tensed up, angry, or even frustrated, but when a patient smile and say thanks to you, that is the best satisfaction you can ever get in a job.

5) Words of advice for our readers who wish to enter your field.

> Here is a piece of advice, if you are really interested in nursing, no matter who you are, where you are from, male or female, nursing is a tough, tough, tough work. But if this is your interest you can enjoy from it.

Here are some of Judy Goh’s artistic achievements:

Berry Role Model No.3 – Bowling Champion/Future EE Engineer – Low Wooi Kit

May 20, 2010

Welcome to Part 3 of the Berry Role Model Series. Our Role Model this issue is Mr Low Wooi Kit, a bowling champion. Not any champion, but a national-level champion to say the least. While being a national-level champion is outstanding, but what is more outstanding is that he debunk the myth about sportsperson not doing well academically. Not only Wooi Kit is able to excel in tempin bowling, he is also pursuing a degree in the highly competitive EE Engineering course at Inti Penang.

I’m sure our Berry Readers would like to know the secret to his success in juggling a sporting career with academic excellence. However, before we start our interview segment, Berry Berry Easy would like to point out that the singlemost trait we admire in Wooi Kit is not his sporting prowess (although we do admire it greatly), but one cannot help but applaud his sportmanship and grace in defeat. It is this trait in him that makes us think that he has the hallmark of a true champion, someone whom we believe qualify as a Berry Role Model. His statement of “Never mind. You have win it fair and square. We do not hate each other in the game.” sealed our high opinions on him. Drop by SonnyKazu: The Untold Story <http://wklow.blogspot.com> by Wooi Kit for gems like this.

Enough of babbling, and let the interview begins.

Role Model #3 – Bowling Champion/Future EE Engineer – Low Wooi Kit

1) Who are you? Low Wooi Kit

> Hello readers! My name is Low Wooi Kit. I came from a small town (now city) of Alor Setar, which is the capital for the paddy land state of Kedah. I am currently studying Electrical and Electronics (EE) Engineering at INTI International College Penang.

2) So what do you do daily as an EE Engineering student?

> First of all, as usual I wake up and prepare myself to college every weekdays, or sometimes even weekends for extra, replacement classes or even paper test. My timetable schedule is not really packed for long semester, but for short semesters, my schedule will be packed. But there will be assignments given by the lecturer so I use that to finish up after class time. Whenever I have free time, I go for outside activities such as badminton, discussions with friends, and not to forget, surfing the internet and updating my own blog, which is also a hobby too.

3) What do you aspire to be in the future?

> Hmm… Honestly speaking, I never really thought about it since my mind was full of career choices. Let it be hotel management, F&B, finance, engineering, IT and so much more. I was really freaked out on choosing the best subject as there are a lot of things that interests me, but I was given a chance of a lifetime to choose a suitable career job for myself. This is not easy though, I had to do a lot of thinking before entering college. After I finally made a tough decision, I landed myself for engineering course. Since then, I had not turned back and tried to make myself comfortable with this engineering study. The lecturers are friendly and have willingness to guide me for my studies. And so are my friends and classmates who are giving their full support for me. Up to now, I am satisfied for what I am now, and I could become an engineer one day. Besides being a future engineer, I might be working in business field as well.

4) Tell us about your bowling career and how it started? Who/What inspired you to take up bowling?

> Great! This will be the longest story-cum-interview ever made. Ok! I was a young boy who really wants to know and explore more (Too proud of myself actually). Since I was 8 years old, my dad was the operations manager of the bowling center in my hometown. He normally works every Thursday night until the end of the center’s operation hours. He also works for a construction company in the morning where the bowling center is owned by that company. I remember every week, he would often bring me to the center to accompany him. So I watched the people play bowling there. One day, my dad asked me to play bowling and have fun on the lanes. So I was happy to get to try out the bowling ball. At first, the house ball was really heavy to carry. My size was small, I could not even carry a heavy ball. So my dad brought me a light 6-pound ball to bowl on the lanes. I landed the bowling ball to the gutter. (And yeah I was happy, since this is just my first ball, I bowled just like the beginners do).

From there onwards, I started to get addicted to bowling. My dad hired a coach to teach me the basics and techniques on bowling. Every week, I improved more and more on my foundations of bowling. This is the most important basics that every bowler has to know. After the basics, I had switched to another coach named T.A. (I more prefer to call him Uncle TA). He is my all-time favourite coach from the start. His coaching skills are amazing. He is quite a friendly coach who was willing to guide me on bowling techniques. And sometimes he might be strict for the moment. Thanks to him, I had made myself successful in local district competition. I later continued my journey to the state level competition where I made myself a potential challenger to other competitors from different districts. I never thought that I could be the one who carries the pride of my state for national competitions.

When I was in Standard 6, I had an unforgettable sweet memory in my life. I was chosen to represent the state bowling team for the annual MSSM Bowling competition. I was excited since this was my first time being able to compete in such a grand event as the other young bowlers in the nation are quite tough to beat, especially those from KL and Selangor. I have contained my pressure during competition and I have lots of support from my team. Eventually, I nailed a gold and a silver medal. And I came a bit close to win another gold medal but lose out to my former teammate by merely few pins. Oh well, my tears were fallen as I was disappointed but I have actually done my best. My parents were very proud of me for what I have achieved.

5) What are the traits that you have that has brought you success on the bowling lane?

> In the sport of bowling, you have to be very passionate about it. To become a champion in bowling is not easy though, sometimes you might be lucky if you get high scores. Every time in training, all I have to do is focus on my basics and techniques which the coaches had guided me. Patience and confidence are also required in order to bowl well. I must say that you must be both physically and mentally tough in this sport.

6) So, share with us your other secret of how you achieved national success in tenpin bowling and yet still able to enter into the highly competitive EE Engineering course? How would you advise our Berry Readers on time management?

> Secrets are meant to be hidden from others. However for this case, I just keep working hard and play hard. Even when I missed some classes, I can still play catch up on studies when I have no scheduled competition ahead. Time management is important for us, from studying to gaming, everything has to be followed as scheduled. As most of you guys know, time does not wait for us. So please try to use your time more efficiently by doing something that is useful, and do not waste your time doing nothing.

7) Before we part, can you share with us some “words of wisdom” which have brought you success over the years.

> Be yourself! Do not give up on your first try. Success is not easily achieveable without hard work. Dare to fail, and learn from your mistakes then you will become successful.

8 ) Oh, before we really end this interview you, would you ever make a fairytale return to the bowling scene?

Sigh…! Probably yes probably no. Why? Because I have an unpredictable future. Haha! In short, I’m not so sure about it yet.

-End-

The following are some of his achievements in the bowling circuit:

  • MSSM 2003 – Singles (Silver), Team of 4 (Gold)
  • Piala Remaja Milo Ranking Masters 2004 GP Finals – Champion
  • Piala Remaja Milo Ranking Masters 2005 GP Finals – Champion
  • Piala Sukan Teras 2006 – Under 15 – First Runner-up
  • Represented Kedah for MSSM 2006 and 2008
  • MSSD Kota Setar 2003 Under 12 – Champion
  • MSS Kedah 2003 – Singles (silver)
  • Kedah Bowl Open Under 15 – Champion

(We at BerryBerryEasy thinks that those are impressive credentials :) )

Check out the photos of Wooi Kit the Bowling Champ in the gallery below.

So there you go, Mr Low Wooi Kit, a sportsperson who also excels in his studies. So if anybody thinks that you cannot excel in academics and sports, think again. Think of how Wooi Kit have done it and apply the method he has shared to your own situation.

Berry Role Model No.2 – Budding Scientist/A-Level Student – Yvonne Choo

March 13, 2010

Welcome to Part 2 of the Berry Role Model Series. Today, we have with us a very interesting personality, Miss Yvonne Choo from INTI University College Nilai who is multi-talented. Finding a talent like her is difficult, but describing her is even more difficult. Why? Because Berry Berry Easy could not decide on how to introduce her to our Berry Readers, since her interests and skills transcend many boundaries. You can call her a budding scientist, a hardcore ballerina, a keen pianist (she can play the guitar too) and a full-time samaritan. Now, you see why it is so hard to describe her.

She is also the author behind the wonderful compilation of notes and tips found in Yvonne’s Study Guide (as linked on Berry Links) aka Short Square’s Study Guide. Mind you, all her notes are original and created painstakingly by herself. In an interesting twist, her study materials do not only come in notes form, they also come in songs and videos.

Since Berry Berry Easy finds it hard to justify her talents with words, we think it is best if we let Yvonne answer questions about herself. So without further delay, we bring you:

Role Model #2 – Budding Scientist/Cambridge A-Level (Science) Student – Yvonne Choo

Yvonne Choo

Yvonne Choo

1) Who are you?

> I’m Yvonne Choo Shuen Lann, a chinese born Malaysian with a hope to change the world with science. I’m currently pursuing Cambridge A-level at INTI University College Nilai. Proud to say, I’m a former student of SMK Cyberjaya.

2) So what do you do daily as an A-level student? (A typical day routine)

> Basically, I’ll have to wake up early in the morning as the morning class starts at 8. There will be classes from 8 till 12 noon, then comes the 2 hours lunch break before the other half of the day begins from 2 o’clock in the afternoon till 6 in the evening. I’m taking four subjects, that explains why my timetable is always packed. But come to think of it, I feel pretty much content ;) I have 2 hours lab sessions each for the three science subjects that I’m taking mainly Chemistry, Biology and Physics and an hour tutorial session every Friday.

When I return home in the evening, I’ll look through the homework (it’s called tutorial, reports or assignments) before doing them. This way, I’ll be able to make sure everything is well planned. In the evening, if there’s still time, I’ll look through the the topics that was taught by my lecturers and even prepare some topics in advance. This practically sums up my typical day routine as an A-level student.

3) What do you aspire to be in the future?

> I wanted to become a scientist with chemistry as my major and biotechnology as my minor. I also wanted to become a part time author – writing reference books, novels and also journals.

4) Why do you want to be a scientist in the future? Who/What was/is your inspiration?

> Why scientist? It’s a long story… I was not a science enthusiast in my primary school. I dislike science. After all it’s just a subject, I told myself. When the teacher called me to fill up the ambition column, I wrote: scientist, doctor and novelist. Weird ain’t it? But that kept me wondering for a while too. When I was caught scribling in books during science class (I was in standard 4), my science teacher challenged me. ‘What do you want to score in science?’ She asked. I told her ‘an A’. She smiled as that was like the most impossible thing in the world. I scored badly in science when I was young. I think that’s where I began to be more focused in science.

When I stepped into standard 5, I began to think more on science. At that time, the case that was often mentioned was deforestation which will cause catastrophe to the world. That is where I started to think ‘I could change the world’. I dreamed of an invention that till now is still in my diary (hopefully one day, that’ll be my very first invention as a scientist). I showed interest in science when I was in secondary school. My teachers spotted that interest in me and gave me test tubes, conical flask and also beaker as a reward when I got high marks and won in some science competition. My parents bought me a toy microscope and telescope (don’t think it’s a toy and it won’t work) and that had basically filled up my free time. When I was in form 3, I thought I was in loved with biology in particular. But not until I met her, Pn Azura Ishak that I changed my mind. I started dreaming Chemistry all day long when I stepped into From 4. (To tell the truth, every teacher in SMK Cyberjaya inspired me in a way that I could not stop thanking them. Without them, I would not be who I am right now.) Then comes Marie Curie and many other scientist that gave me the idea to be strong and persistent. That is why till now no matter how impossible come to think of it, I will not give up and I think I’ll be able to be a successful scientist in the near future ;)

5) On a personal note, tell us more about your passion for ballet.

> I started learning baby ballet at the age of 3 years old. My parents were the one that brought me there, patiently nurturing me in a way that I started to like ballet. I became greatly in love with ballet when my parents brought me all the way to Macau to watch two ballet by the National Ballet of China. They even bought VIP tickets for me so I could watch in a better view. That was really a memorable event I’d been through. My ballet teacher was there with me so I could enter the theater even the troupe were practicing. The way those ballet dancers dance inspired me to work harder and take ballet more seriously. ‘I am in love with ballet’ I told myself since then.

6) You seemed to have the hunger to help others. So tell us more about your motivation in wanting to produce a blog with study guide to help students.

> I like it when I can help others in the range that I’m capable of. I started making notes for myself since I was in form 4. The notes I made was hand-written on pieces of junk papers I obtained from various sources. Recycling in a way ;) When my grand father saw my notes scattered all over, he volunteered to help me bind them together. I made 3 books for chemistry, 1 for biology, 1 for physics and some leaflets within the two years. One day, when I was preparing for my exams, I found out that the notes I did was more comprehensive than reference books because not many reference books that has everything inside. Some of them focused more on certain topics and neglected the others, some has nothing mentioned about some topics. That’s a disadvantage. ‘Which reference books should students choose then if they want every topic to be explained, should they just buy everything in the market?’ I thought. That’s where I thought of compiling notes from various sources into one. That’s where my notes comes in. ‘If I compile all my notes, everything will be in there and I will not need to spend more to buy every reference books.’

So I began to re-type my notes in the holidays while I revised. And little by little each day, I finally managed to compile some notes in my computer. Since some of my friends did ask me for my notes, I decided to post it online so everyone in need can download and print them for reference. That’s how it all started. The tips for certain subjects was added on due to the demand by readers. Overall, I think it’s a good start for my own book in the future ;)

7) What satisfaction do you gain from producing those study guide?

> It’s not the monetary reward or anything like that that I’d been looking for. It’s the unexplainable satisfaction that comes within when readers and subscribers of my blog tells me that the notes and tips helped them, they improved. That is more than enough. That feeling of being able to contribute, being apprecited and being part of the helping-others family are more than anything in the world. I’ll be even happier when the notes and tips I provided in my blog helped them to score well in SPM!

8 ) Now that you are on track to pursue your dreams, can you give some Words of advice for our readers who wish to chase their dreams.

> I’d always believe in the saying ‘when there’s a will, there’s a way.’ That’s the saying that kept me going for years. When you aim or dream of something for your future, go straight and don’t be easily brought away by other factors. It will be hard at first but when it really comes true, I bet it’s worth sacrificed. Always follow your heart and also your wisdom as nothing is impossible if you believe.

-End-

The following work are a subset her passion/work thus far:

  1. The Electrochemical Series song by Yvonne Choo
  2. Collection of SPM Science Stream and Mathematics notes available at Yvonne’s Study Guide.
  3. Game book “Survival Chemistry for Us All” – Form 5 Chapter 3 – Oxidation and Reduction (Check out the cute drawings)
  4. Original short stories dating back to June 2008 can be found at http://balletrocks92.blogspot.com/
  5. Last but not least, her talent and love for ballet.

Check out the photos of Yvonne the Ballerina in the gallery below.

So there you go, Ms Yvonne Choo, the person whom was described by many as “someone that likes to contribute”. We think that is an understatement for this bundle of helpful energy. Just click on the links and visit her sites, then you’ll know why. Do drop us a line too if you find her inspiring. :)

Berry Role Model No.1 – Artist/Freelance Designer – Kendrick Ng

December 7, 2009

Despite the proliferation of the Internet which allows the rapid dissemination of information, students remained largely uninformed regarding the career choices. Hence, Berry Berry Easy is starting a series called “Berry Role Models” where real people in various different fields will be giving advices to our Young Berries who would be making decisions regarding their career choices. We intend to make this more of a light-reading, so it will be in an “Q&A format“.

First off, we have with us, Mr Kendrick Ng, a talented young artist/freelance designer (his job scope is ever-expanding). He is the person behind Kendrick’s Art Blog, which has many excellent designs. (His blog was also featured in the Berry Friends section prior to this interview) Without further adieu, let us soak in the experience of Kendrick, the artist/freelance designer:

Role Model #1 – Artist/Freelance Designer – Kendrick Ng

Kendrick Ng

Kendrick Ng

1) Who are you?

I am Kendrick Ng Tiong Heng. I came from a small town of Sipitang at the west coast of Sabah, Malaysia. I am currently enrolled in Computing Science majoring in Multimedia.

2) Why did you enter the field? Who/What was/is your inspiration?

I choose this field because I loved it and I really enjoyed it. In the beginning, I only helped my friends to solve web design problems…it started from Friendster layout, then slowly I decided to design wallpapers for my friends and finally an active blogger which I posted my designed wallpapers and I wanted to improve it and this is how I choose this field. By the same time I was also the official Student Council photographer, designer and multimedia/creative director for my University and sometimes you could see my designs in blogs, web pages, advertisements, magazines, newspapers or even tickets!

My inspiration dates back to when I was 4 years old…..this inspiration came from a Japanese animation “Doraemon”. He has been my idol even till today, whenever I want to design something, I will think of him and he really inspires me a lot.

3) So what do you do daily as an artist/freelance designer” ?

Because I am still a university student, being a freelance designer is always my first option to earn some income and also to build my port folio before I could work as a full timer. Everyday, there are e-mail requests from many customers. All I have to do is to accept it or not based on their offer.

4) What satisfaction do you gain from your job?

Hmm….In my opinion, my greatest satisfaction is to see the smiles and satisfaction of my customers, friends, family and colleagues. Their support, satisfaction towards my designs is what keeps me going.

5) Words of advice for our readers who wish to enter your field.

Dear readers, this is a very interesting field and all you need is creativity and passion in art, as simple as that. If you love capturing photos, or like to edit photos, or even love to draw and design. I recommend you to enroll in photography, designing, web designing-related course. My course, in fact is a little different because it’s a mix course because it consists of science and art. But no matter what university or institute you are enrolled in, as long as your love in arts and creativity is strong, this is the field for you!
